Lydia Bennet is the youngest of the five Bennet sisters. She is fifteen early in the story, but later turns sixteen. She is constantly competing with her sister Kitty, but it often shows how close they are as siblings.

Lydia ran away with George Wickham after being led to believe he would marry her, when he really had no intention of doing so. However, the pair were made to marry by Mr. Darcy, who acted in secret to help protect Elizabeth and the rest of the family's reputation.

Personality[]

Lydia is strong-willed and frivolous, and often causes a scene. As the baby of the family, she is spoiled by her mother. However, she is the least dear to her father, who makes sarcastic remarks on hers and Kitty's naive and silly personalities. Her best friends are her sister Kitty and Mrs. Forster, who is mentioned often, but never seen in the novel. She loves dancing, shopping, and being a socialite. It has been speculated that this is Jane Austen's way of pointing out the characteristics of some of the naive debutantes in her era and satirizing them.

Appearance[]

In the novel Lydia is the tallest of her sisters; however, in the movie she is the smallest. She has brown hair that is usually worn in curls, and is often seen in a hat. She has a peach complexion, thin lips and green eyes. She has also been described as "well-built". She is also seen in chapter 39.
